Aloha State of Mind
From our top-floor balcony suite at the oceanfront Kaimana Beach Hotel, my husband and I are truly amazed. Not only does this historic Waikiki hotel by Private Label Collection (private-label-collection.com) sit directly on the sand of Kainmana Beach with jaw-dropping views of the Pacific Ocean, the Honolulu skyline and Diamond Head, but during our stay, all eyes are on the newborn Hawaiian monk seal and its mother, who chose this serene beach location to give birth. With this rare sighting, it is easy for us to immediately embrace the aloha spirit, renewing a lifestyle of love, joy and compassion.

'The best thing we've ever done in Hawaii': What it means to travel responsibly in the Aloha State
When it came to choosing a hotel, I opted for one of the only Hawaiian owned and operated hotels on the beach in Waikiki, Kaimana Beach Hotel. Though their environmental policies are still evolving with new ownership — much attention has been placed on their cool renovation by the Henderson Design Group — their restaurant, Hau Tree, helmed by Oahu chef Chris Kajioka, was recently crowned an ocean-friendly destination by Surfrider.

13 Amazing Asian American-owned Hotels in the U.S.
As Waikiki Beach's only boutique right on the sand, the Kaimana Beach Hotel was originally built in 1963 as a Japanese-designed and owned hotel, integrating touches of Asian influences. So, when it reopened this February, owner BJ Kobayashi, who long sought to bring the iconic property back into the hands of Hawaiians, was careful to honor those traditional odes, but also freshen them up into an Instagram-ready getaway.

Restaurant Insider with Anne Lee: Hau Tree
The iconic 58-year-old Kaimana Beach Hotel was renovated during the pandemic by Jonathan McManus and his team. One of the magical touches of this hotel is the welcoming ocean breeze, the magnificent view overlooking the ocean and the famous hau tree, which is the namesake of its restaurant. I was curious to hear how a successful real estate developer also took on the role of a restaurateur. Here is his story about his passion for food, design and insight into the future of the industry.

If you’re traveling to Oahu, chances are good that you’ll stay in Waikiki, the busy slice of land between canal and sea where most of the lodging is clustered. Hotel towers shape the skyline, spring breakers zip down Kalākaua Avenue on electric scooters, and beachfront bars sling $15 mai tais. In the heart of the neighborhood lie the island’s historic luxury hotels, including the Moana Surfrider and Royal Hawaiian. But Waikiki is lesser known for a different kind of stay,...
